World Tambourelli Championships 2017 in Riverford, Devon, England

The World Tambourelli Championships took place near Totnes in Devon this year on the 5th and 6th of August. Once again the Scottish Tambourelli team sent representatives to compete for the trophies against players from England, Germany, Spain and Japan.

In the Men's Singles tournament, Bazil Hughes (from just outside Kirkcowan) was able to take home his 4th championship title, avenging last year's agonizing defeat to the defending champion Marco Zink (from Dresden in Germany).

In the Women's Singles tournament, Chloe Bruce (who runs the weekly tambourelli club in Newton Stewart) was defeated in the final by Katrin Ueberfuhr.

The Doubles tournament was won by Chloe Bruce and Ringo Sobiella (from Dresden) completing a shut-out for the combined forces of Scotland and Germany in the adult competitions.

The children's singles was won by the 13-year-old Haruka Takamura, who travelled all the way from Tokyo to compete, while the Doubles was won by Nuno Priestman (12) and Noi Priestman (10), two brothers from London whose father grew up playing tambourelli near Newton Stewart and carried the sport with him when he moved away.

Next year the tournament will take place in Newton Stewart. Newton Stewart is the home town of Tambourelli, it was devised here in the 1970s. The 2018 World Championships will be held in the final weekend of July, where Bazil, Katrin, Chloe, Ringo, Haruka, Nuno and Noi will attempt to defend their World Championship titles against the ever-growing crowd of players from the UK and abroad.

.
Wonderful catering was provided by Julia Elliott, and Nigel and Melody Kinch, along with exotic contributions from our Japanese guests. Thanks to you all.
We should like to thank Oliver and Esther Watson for their generous hospitality, Luscombe Organic Drinks and South Devon Rural Housing Association for sponsorship, and TamSports for prizes. Thanks too, to all those who participated and made it such a delightful event.
